Hospital peer reviews are just like what they sound; a review of all of your colleagues or coworkers. Hospital peer reviews come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and styles. For instance, a hospital peer review can be done internally or one can be done externally. In most cases, external hospital peer reviews are preferred, as they are often performed by outside reviewing companies; companies that are educated on the art of medical reviews, but companies that are unbiased.

Each year, a large number of hospitals in the United States undergo hospital peer reviews. One of the many reasons for that is because of the results. Hospital peer review results can be used for a number of different things, including improvement. There are many hospital directors who actually want to know if there is something wrong with their establishment, as a problem can only be fixed once it is noticed. Perhaps, that the biggest pro or plus side to having your facility undergo a hospital peer review. Unfortunately, no hospital is perfect. Patients usually get left waiting too long or some patients aren’t always treated with kindness. A hospital peer review can give you comfort in knowing that your hospital is being run properly or at least give you improvements to work on.
Although there are pros or plus sides to having your hospital undergo a hospital peer review, there are also a number of cons or downsides to doing so as well. One of those downsides is the cost. It can get fairly costly to hire the services of an outside hospital peer review company. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the money wouldn’t be worth it or be considered well spent, but you if you are on a budget you may have a difficult time affording the extra expense. If that is the case, you may want to think about going with an internal hospital peer review. Yes, it has been said that external reviews are better, as they produce unbiased results, but any hospital peer review is better than none at all.
As a reminder, the decision as to whether or not you want to have your hospital undergo a hospital peer review is yours to make, as it is optional. However, with that in mind, there are a number of benefits to doing so, some of which where touched on above.
